POUND THAT ABALONE!

A PROFESSIONAL INFLUENCE LESSON ON PRE-FRAMING

As a diver for most of my life, I consider myself quite fortunate to live in California.  The cold waters off the California coast are infamous for their rich sea life.  One of these amazing creatures is the California Abalone.  This delicacy can be found around the world in elite restaurants, sometimes for as much as $95.00 per lb.  Many years ago, before the state of California put a moratorium on the delicious little shellfish, I used to dive the back side of Catalina Island in my double special secret location.  It was a sure thing to come home with this prize catch.abalonediver  One thing that you learn quickly though, is that abalone must be prepared right.  If not, it is so rubbery and foul that it becomes inedible.
So let’s spend the next couple of minutes and learn how to properly prepare an abalone.
“But Mick,” you ask “what does this have to do with influence?”   Never mind that.  Just read on.
Once you bring the Abalone home, Pry it open and remove the abalone from its beautiful shell.  The exposed abalone is flat and roughly 7" in circumference.
Next, place the abalone on wooden cutting board.  Then take a steel mallet and proceed to pound the heck out of the abalone.  I mean really pound it!   Beat that dead abalone into submission.  After excessive pounding with the mallet, pick up the abalone and inspect it.  You will undoubtedly notice the mallet marks.  Then turn it over and pound it some more.  Then, after you have exhausted yourself, pound it again.  Keep going until you swear that you can almost see through it, then, and only then... You guessed it, POUND IT SOME MORE.

It is now time to cook your delicacy.  Put a tiny bit of olive oil, lemon juice and butter in a pan.  Heat the pan.  Then drop in your abalone.  In literally less than 2 seconds, flip the abalone, let it set for 1 second and then remove.  The whole cooking process takes less than 4 seconds—that’s if, and only if, you pounded it long enough.
You are done!
That is the thing about abalone.  If you prepare it right, by swinging away with that mallet, the cook time is less than 4 seconds.  On the other hand, if you do not pound it enough.  I mean you pound like crazy but stop just a little bit before you should have.  The abalone will be ruined.  Useless!   All of that money spent will have been wasted.  There are no refunds!  You simply lose everything.

IT IS NOT HOW YOU CLOSE, IT IS HOW YOU PREPARE!
One of the most common emails we receive, are from subscribers that want to know what the best closing line is.  They want to know that one thing you can say that will make all of your customers say yes.
They want to know how to cook the abalone, when in fact how you cook the abalone is irrelevant.  One the other hand, how you prepare the abalone is everything!
Closing (cooking) is easy when you have pre-framed (prepared) your client for agreement (but please don’t pound your client with a mallet).  The Professional Influence system is about preparation.  In upcoming weeks we will give away free lessons on how to properly prepare you client!
Are you ready?

Great!  Let’s pound some abalone!
